How Audit IT Security Systems Can Protect Your Company's Data

Audit IT security involves making a technical assessment of a computer system, or even just one individual application within a computer system. This is necessary to ensure that the system operates as efficiently as possible, and that there are no data leaks which could lead to confidentiality being compromised. These security audits can be carried out using computer systems, or they can be painstakingly performed by individuals. The most effective audits will involve a combination of both, as each has important strengths and weaknesses which complement each other.

A manual audit will obviously take more time to complete, as well as needing more man hours and resources. It is impossible to quantify this demand, as it will depend on how many members of staff will need to be interviewed, and how many hours will need to be devoted to each interview. The complexity of the computer systems being audited and analyzed will also be a factor. Any breakdown in hardware can result in information being improperly transmitted, and may also lead to a potential security leak. The first essential in any security audit is to make sure that equipment is functioning properly.

Manual checks will usually be enough to determine whether or not any hardware needs replacing, and this is usually the quickest and easiest part of the audit to complete. The software part of the audit is what will take the time, especially if it is believed that there is a security leak, but the source cannot yet be identified. Interviews of members of staff will need to be extremely detailed, and also very thoroughly recorded. Any information which may be of use needs to be logged and compared with information from other sources.

Computer based audit IT security systems can do a lot to cut down the excessive workload, and to help identify any potential problems more quickly. If you can afford the time and expense of having professional programmers create a custom solution, you can make it virtually impossible for a security leak to pass through unnoticed. Most companies are not in that position, and for that reason an off the shelf solution is usually needed.

These systems can still prove effective in finding potential problems. They work by comparing access logs and file changes over days and even weeks, to try to find any unusual patterns of activity. If there is unauthorized access being gained, this will almost certainly show up. Not only that, but the system will be able to determine how that access was gained, and through which computer workstation. This information can then be used to set intricate traps for the unwary who have breached the security system. A combination of manual and computer based procedures will give you the highest degree of audit IT security.
